WELL bred two-year-old Gold Busker kept his unbeaten record intact when he powered his way to victory in the $100,000 Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes over 1200 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston today.
The Logan McGill-trained gelding had been working well in Melbourne but connections opted to concentrate on the Betfair Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival with the son of Oratorio.
Gold Busker made his debut in Tasmania in the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1200m two weeks ago and after that success it was decided to keep the horse in the state to progress to the Gold Sovereign.
McGill, a former jockey who has only been training in his own right for four months, said the prize money in Tasmania offered connection their best option.
“The prize money here is great and when we assessed this horse we all agreed the Tassie races would be our best option,” McGill said.
Gold Busker was ridden by Jarrod Todd in the Magic Millions race and while Stephen Baster is usually called on to ride McGill’s horses, connections opted to stay with Todd.
He had Gold Busker settled in the lead from a good gate (3) while another well fancied runner Gee Gees Top Notch was left to fend for herself wide with no cover for almost the entire trip.
When Todd called on his charge to extend in the home straight he quickly set up a winning margin and went on to score comfortably from Siorca with Band on The Run flashing home late to grab third ahead of Gee Gees Top Notch that battled gamely despite her tough run.
