LEADING Tasmanian jockey David Pires received the best news possible when he visited his specialist today regarding his injured wrist that prevented him from riding at the last two Tasmanian race meetings.

Pires fell at the trials in Hobart last Tuesday and injured his left wrist and there were fears that he may have fractured a bone in his hand.

But orthopedic specialist Peter Clements delivered a much better diagnosis today.

“I had an MRI and today my specialist Peter Clements told me that there is no apparent breaks in the hand and that it is more a serious sprain that will keep me out no longer than another week,” Pires said.

“Originally I was expecting to miss up to six weeks and maybe longer as a worse case scenario but I can be back riding on Wednesday week in Launceston,” he said.

Pires is leading the jockeys’ premiership with 24 winners and six clear of his nearest rival, apprentice Ismail Toker and 10 clear of fellow senior rider Anthony Darmanin.

Pires is being tipped to easily win the jockeys’ premiership for the first time owing to his flourishing association with leading trainer Scott Brunton and an alignment with other top stables.
