LONGFORD trainer Barry Goodrick has the knack of buying cheap horses that pay their way and Ash For Cash is the latest galloper in that category to fond its way into his Longford stables.
Ash For Cash delivered a sensational performance to win a class one handicap over 1420 metres at the TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston on Wednesday night.
The flashy five-year-old grey gelding defied a racing pattern that appeared to be favouring leaders to come form last on the turn to win by over four lengths with apprentice Millie Whitehouse-Summers aboard.
Ash For Cash defeated Our Casanova and the favourite Arkadashim.
It was the gelding’s 11th start in Tasmania with this his second win along with four minor placings that has well and truly covered his purchase price.
“He was a maiden that had run two seconds when I bought him for $3000 on the Internet off Charles Cassar in Victoria,” Goodrick said.
“He (Cassar) told me that the horse was as sound as a bell and he was right. In fact, everything he told me about this horse proved to be spot-on.”
“His only fault is that he can be a bit piggish at time,” he said.
Ash For Cash put the writing on the wall with a fast-finishing second at his previous attempt in Launceston.
“He’s been running on strongly but he tends to hit a couple of flat spots midrace so tonight we told Millie to get going on him earlier and ride him through the flat spots,” he said.
