MATURE aged novice driver Craig Hayes will take a four-point lead going into the final round of the BOTRA Novice Drivers Series in Launceston later this week following two good results in Hobart on Sunday night.

Hayes scored a win aboard Metro Master in the fourth series heat to take his tally to 36 points and clear of Damian Spring who also drove a winner in Scruffy Jake in the third heat on Sunday night.

Hayes, 54, has been involved in harness racing for many years as a trainer but only acquired his driver’s licence just over two years ago.

In the first round of heats at Devonport last Sunday week he partnered Our Last Night to victory to earn the maximum 12 points and he also finished sixth to earn five points aboard Villify to end the night in second spot with 17 points.

Hayes has now driver 20 winners from 198 drives and given his recent form he won’t take as long to accrue his next 20 winners.

The final round of the six-heat series will be run in Launceston at a twilight meeting on Friday which will be broadcast on Sky2.

The standings after four rounds of the BOTRA Novice Drivers Series are:

36 – Crag Hayes.

27 – Dylan Ford.

25 – Braydon Withers.
