CONSISTENT front-running gelding Makes Cents gave his rivals a galloping lesson in a benchmark 78 handicap over 1650 metres at Devonport on Sunday that proved a point for trainers Charlie Goggin and Luella Meaburn.
At some of the gelding’s more recent outings riders have tried to rein the horse in and prevent him from running a race at his leisure.
But apprentice Erhan Kacmaz rode to strict instructions on Sunday and Makes Cents delivered the goods.
Co-trainer Meaburn was adamant Makes Cents performs best when allowed to bowl along at his own tempo and that was the case on Sunday.
Makes Cents set a solid tempo and one that allowed him to travel about three lengths clear of his nearest rival for most of the journey.
When Kacmaz asked makes Cents to extend turning for home the gelded son of Dash For Cash extended his lead and went on to score by almost three lengths from Uboa with Fair Colony a long neck away third.
Makes Cents has now won six of his 50 starts but he also has accrued 17 minor placings that has helped his career stake earnings to almost $92,000.
