In Brief

  • Wynward trainer backs up from treble last week.
  • Four of the five odds on.
  • Trainer has won with nine of past 13 starters.

Trainer Ben Englund has been riding the crest of a winning wave recently and if betting is any indication, that rich run of success looks to continue in Hobart tonight.

Tasting victory with nine of his past 13 runners, Englund has five runners engaged for tonight’s 10-event Hobart card, each from the hugely successful Dyna Double One x Wynburn Arrow litter.

“We managed to get three winners at Hobart last week when they didn’t appear all that well drawn, tonight they all look to have their boxes; hopefully we didn’t burn up all our luck last Thursday,” said Englund.

Batting at a winning strike-rate of 32%, the five Englund-trained runners have been installed race favourites for their respective events tonight, meaning there’s every chance the Wynyard conditioner could leave Hobart with a massive haul.

“I’ve had three winners a few times at a meeting but never more than that,” Englund added.

Englund’s night gets up and running in the first event with Wynburn Babe a $1.70 favourite from box seven over 340m.

Winner at four of her 10 starts, the talented juvenile steps out over the sprint trip for the first time in her career, where she does look to have a class edge on her rivals.

In race three, Breeders’ Classic winner Wynburn Lethal takes her place from box eight chasing a fourth win in succession. An almost unbackable $1.20 favourite, she’s expected to make light work of her opposition as is Wynburn Dancer in race four, the winner in Launceston on Monday night a prohibitive $1.12 favourite.

“They come out of juvenile grade at the end of February,” Englund said.

“They’ve won their 400-500 in that grade so that’s why they are back to 340m tonight. They are there for them so you may as well try and win them.”

Wynburn Redson and Wynburn Rambo round out Englund’s night in races five and seven respectively over 461m.

Early markets see Wynburn Redson a red hot $1.14 elect from his box three draw while a more generous $2.50 is on offer for Wynburn Rambo in race seven from box five.

“The price isn’t there but I think (Wynburn) Redson is the better boxed of the two; I’d rather see Rambo drawn out wider,” Englund said.

“They all look to be great chances and if we manage to win five races on the night with the one litter it would be something. Hopefully some luck goes our way … you always need a bit of that.”
