In Brief

  • Yole has a night out in Hobart.
  • Freeman finds the top on Youngbloods leader board.
  • Ryley Major too classy once again.

Leading trainer Ben Yole last night chalked up his 30th Tasmanian training win of the season with five winners from his stable on last night’s Hobart card.

Willybe was the first winner for the Yole stable when leading all the way in the second heat of the Allen Williams Memorial for the maiden pacers, with Ben’s brother Mark in the sulky.

Willybe wins in Hobart on Sunday.

“It looked his race on paper when he drew one, he got it pretty easy in front with no pressure and won accordingly,” said trainer Ben Yole after the win.

Willybe was placed at his only other start in the state when second in the first heat of the series in Devonport last week.

It was a return to form for Mark Yole as he prepares to represent the state at the Black Friday Bash race meeting at Wayville in South Australia’s CBD on Friday night.

Quick Changeover was able to overcome a second-row draw to take out the second race of the night.

Driver Taylor Ford took off three-wide at the 1100 metre mark and proved too good by a half neck over Betterthanfetta.

“We put Taylor (Ford) on him as he seems to run for the girls, he ran a really good race from back in the field when Danielle Hill drove him in the Australian Drivers Championship a few weeks ago, so we thought we would try a female driver again and it paid off,” said the winning trainer.

Mach Charm won her second 6ty° Youngbloods Challenge heat taking out race three.

It was the tenth career win for the well-bred six-year-old mare who is by Mach Three out of the Christian Cullen mare Glenferrie Serenade.

Mach Charm wins race three in Hobart.

“She has been a terrific mare for us, she has now won two penalty-free races for us, it was a good drive by Ben (Woodsford) he didn’t panic as the race didn’t pan out like we thought it would early and he was patient late as the mare has a very good sprint late,” explained Ben.

The win was the first leg of a driving double for Woodsford with the Kiwi-born driver scoring in the next race with Streitkid.

The Yole stable had to then wait until race six for win number four when Give Me The Night led home a stable quinella by 3.1 metres over Heza Rummage.

“He won well being driven sit and sprint. Gareth Rattray gets along with him as well as anyone and he gave him a ten out of ten drive,” said the trainer.

Jeans Mattjesty (pictured) gave Yole his fifth winner of the night, which also completed a driving double for Taylor Ford.

The gelded son of Royal Mattjesty was able to overcome a 20-metre handicap in the 2090 metre event.

“I thought if he could tack on early from his handicap without having to do a lot of work that he may have been too strong for them and that’s the way it panned out,” said Ben.

Unfortunately for Yole he didn’t take the pacer home after being claimed and will join the stables of Troy Hillier.

Also claimed in the race was the Conor Crook trained Monarkmac who won’t have to change his postcode as the pacer will do his future racing in the Rohan Hillier stable.

It was the fourth time that Yole has trained five winners on a single program achieving the feet previously in Launceston on 31 March this year and twice in 2017 in Launceston on 19 May and in Devonport on 25 June of that year.

Other trainers to achieve the feat on Tasmanian soil include Phillip Ford (once), Barrie Rattray (six winners once, five winners twice), Wayne Rattray (six winners once, five winners once), Emma Stewart (once) and Neville Webberley (three occasions).

Also on the Hobart card, we saw Andrew Freeman team up with trainer Heath Woods to score in heat four of the 6ty° Youngbloods with talented pacer The Shallows who won his fifth race in a row.

As for Freeman, he was able to find the top of the points table on 40-points over, Ben Woodsford and Taylor Ford 39, Charlie Castles 22, Matthew Howlett and Malcom Jones 21, Justin Howlett 16, Lachlan Dakin 14, Samantha Freeman and Wade Rattray 11.

Rattray and Jones came into the series after Hannah Van Dongen was ineligible after being suspended while Georgie Hayward was forced to withdraw from the series with a fractured elbow.

The final two heats will be held on Friday night in Launceston.

Ryley Major was too classy once again for his rivals in the Triple M Hobart Pace, scoring by 2.4-metres over Blackbird Power with Call Me Hector a neck away third.
