Victorian racehorse syndicator Joe O’Neill is quietly confident that his well-related colt Not Another Red can make a winning debut in Hobart on Sunday.
O’Neill, who races the Magic Albert two-year-old in partnership with a big group of owners, including several Tasmanians, had his confidence boosted when Not Another Red won a barrier trial by 10 lengths last week.
“I have been quite excited by this horse for some time and I’m really looking forward to Sunday’s race,” he said.
“(Trainer) Charlie Goggin thinks that it will take a really good horse to beat him.”
Not Another Red is a full brother to stakes-placed Too Many Reds, a winner of seven races, and a half brother to promising filly Faith N Courage, a Hobart and Launceston winner this season.
He was given a preparation late last year but, although he won a barrier trial at Elwick in November, he didn’t make it to the races.
He’s had three trials since resuming.
On exposed form, The Welshman looks the obvious danger to Not Another Red on Sunday but the Brunton stable has two first-starters that will bear watching.
