A FREAK accident has denied star Tasmanian galloper Conquering of winning another George Adams Plate.
Conquering was scratched this morning as a result of a hoof injury sustained early in the week.
A horse shoe nail was lodged in the gelding’s off-side front hoof near the frog and trainer Charlie Goggin is at a loss as to how the nail became lodged.
“It’s not a nail from the horse’s shoe. We have no idea how it has got there. It’s a mystery,” Goggin said.
“We removed the nail and treated the wound and we were hopeful it would be cleared up by race day but it wasn’t to be,” he said.
Conquering was considered a short-priced favourite ($2.10) to win his second George Adams Plate (1600m) but with his absence the market is likely to throw up Dream Flyer and Forbidden Quest as the two best chances.
