In Brief

  • Trial form only guide to opening race on Sunday.
  • I'm a Floozy has come on since her last start win.
  • Early start on Sunday with first at 11.10.

Finding winners at the thoroughbred meeting in Devonport on Sunday won’t be easy with this the first meeting back on the synthetic surface since February.

The opening race for two-year-olds boasts a field of 14 of which 11 are first-starters with trial form the only guide for the 1150-metre sprint.

However, three standouts from recent trials could be worth an investment and they are Vienna Boy from the Adam Trinder stable, the Glenn Stevenson-trained War Correspondent and Apollo Rocket that is prepared by Ken and Tanya Hanson at Longford.

Apollo Rocket (Needs Further-Reach the Moon) is unbeaten from two trials with the latest on the Spreyton synthetic last week, winning by two lengths over Labby Rock and Sienna’s Word with the minor placegetters also to contest the first race on the nine-event card.

War Correspondent won two trials at Longford in a few months ago and last week in Devonport the gelding scored an impressive trial win over The Beekeeper and Trifurther that also are engaged in the race.

His trainer Glenn Stevenson said the gelded son of Time for War has an abundance of natural speed but with so much other speed in the race he might end up being caught on a limb from an extremely wide gate.

Vienna Boy could not have been more impressive in winning a trial on the Launceston track last month scoring by two lengths and it could have been by further had jockey Bulent Muhcu so desired.

The gelding has drawn well in gate six and Trinder says the son of Unencumbered has come on since the trial and from a decent barrier he expects a forward showing.

I’m A Floozy

The Angela Brakey-trained I’m a Floozy looms as one of the best bets on the program.

I’m a Floozy scored an impressive win in Launceston last Sunday week in a maiden over 1100m and she steps up to a class one over 1150m (race 5).

Brakey said the filly has trained on since her win and that as she was once was trained on the synthetic track she expects her to be extremely competitive.

The first race is scheduled to start at 11.10 with the last of nine at 15:50. All races will be live streamed on TasracingTV with mounting yard coverage.

Watch Vienna Boy win a trial in Launceston late last month.
