JUMPIN JACK JASPER broke a long run of outs when he powered home to win the Paul Wunderwald Discretionary over 2579 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday night.
With Ricky Duggan in the cart the seven-year-old gelding produced a scintillating sprint at the business end of proceedings to score by a short half-head from Winjammer with Ulos 1-1/2 metres astern and just in advance of the luckless Dodgermemate
Jumpin Jack Jasper had not won since January when successful in a discretionary handicap over 2200m in Launceston.
It was a masterful drive by Duggan who had the gelding settled behind the leader Prince Of Tara for most of the race while Winjammer faced the breeze.
When Winjammer gained the better of the leader Duggan acted swiftly to get his charge off the fence to avoid being dragged back through the field.
Once in the clear in the straight Jumpin Jack Jasper powered home to grab victory in the very last stride.
The win was pleasing for owner Steph Pye who has been racing standardbreds with success for about 20 years.
“This horse hasn’t had much luck in his races of late but tonight he had a couple of things go his way and it was a great drive by Ricky (Duggan),” Pye said.
Jumpin Jack Jasper is trained at Brighton by Adrian Duggan who is holidaying with his family in Cairns (Queensland).
