LONGFORD trainer Bill Ryan heaped praise on jockey Stephen Maskiell after he guided his consistent three-year-old Speed Control to a convincing win in the Fuji Xerox Sales Maiden/Class 1 Plate over 1550m metres on a slow track at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday.

Speed Control was given a gun run by Maskiell who had the gelding on the fence and in fifth position from a wide draw after the field had travelled 400 metres.

Speed Control travelled well to the home turn and when Maskiell called on the gelded son of Tough Speed to extend in the home straight he powered home to defeat a game Lovely Darts with the favourite Hell Strong third.

It was Speed Control’s second win for the season and while Ryan was unsure about the gelding’s immediate future he was thankful to Maskiell for convincing him to run the horse in the race.
