TOP Tasmanian greyhound trainer Ted Medhurst celebrated his fourth Dowling McCarthy Hankook Tyres Devonport Cup win today when his star sprinter Keune came from behind to notch a career best win.
Keune missed the start by over a length while the second favourite Breaker’s Tip made the most of box one to lead comfortably to the top turn.
Keune ($1.90 fav) made up lost ground by scurrying along the rail and had the leader in her sights turning for home.
When Breaker’s Tip shifted up the track Keune sped through along the rail and went on to defeat Breaker’s Tip by almost a length with the winner’s kennel mate Lorus Time a close-up third.
Medhurst’s other Cup winners were Blazenka’s Flyer (1990), Super Instinct (2005) and Dark Vito last year.
“This is her best win for sure because she’s missed the start by over a length and then chased down one of the best dogs in the state,” Medhurst said.
Keune has been a model of consistency since she started racing and other than a lean spell soon after she had a fall at Devonport early in her career she has been ultra consistent.
“She’s been very good at the top level as she’s won Laurels in Hobart and a Breeders Classic in Launceston but this is clearly her biggest win,” Medhurst said.
Keune has won 16 of her 24 starts as well as three minor placings for career prizemoney of almost $66,000.
