Over the past months, Peter Staples has caught up with several of the state’s leading trainers who have key chances across the Ladbrokes Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

Sunday’s Magic Millions Classic for three and four-year-olds has attracted a quality field and the winner of the race last year was All-Star Mile nominee Mandela Effect. After an unlucky second in the Group 3 Bow Mistress, three-year-old filly Deroche will be well found in the market, while John Blacker has targeted this race for some time with handy four-year-old Rough Road.

John Blacker – Rough Road

Following a win on debut, Blacker has always had high hopes for the gelding who enters Sunday’s race off a closing second on Ladbrokes Hobart Cup Day.

Leanne Gaffney – Deroche

The filly secured some black-type in the Bow Mistress where few could argue that she should have won the race had she not been held up in the home straight. The Magic Millions Classic looks a far easier target than Wednesday’s Group 3 Vamos Stakes which is also over 1400 metres.
