IT isn’t often a trainer will rue a horse winning a race but that was the case with Broadmarsh mentor Brendan McShane after his promising gelding Livermore emerged triumphant in a class one handicap over 1420m in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Livermore powered home along the rails courtesy of a brilliant ride from Bulent Muhcu to defeat Alpine Angel and Hello Gertie.

After the win McShane explained why the win was untimely.

“The horse is heading towards the Night Cup over 2100 metres next month and I had a program mapped out for him but tonight’s win has made him ineligible for what would have been his next start,” McShane said.

“It was a maiden-class one over 1600m in a fortnight but now we might have to look at a race that he most likely can’t win just to get his race fitness to a level that will be needed to win the Night Cup over 2100 metres here in Launceston next month,” he said.

While McShane was unsure of which race Livermore will tackle next he said the $100,000 weight-for-age Thomas Lyons (1400m) might be an option but getting his promising stayer into that race might take some doing as the gelding had a low rating of 59 before this latest win.

“The horse has a lot of scope as he’s already shown he can stay and tonight he showed a great turn of foot to win over 1420m.”

“He still only young and somewhat immature which is why we won’t be pushing him towards the major cups this season,” he said.
