OF the local contingent in today’s Betfair Exchange Hobart Cup over 2400m Geegees Goldengirl, Up Cups and Player One look the testing material for the interstate invaders.
Up Cups won the Brighton Cup (2100m) and Summer Cup (2200m) in Hobart so he is the form horse while Geegees Goldengirl and Player One filled the minor placings in the Summer Cup.
Player One has been a model of consistency this time in winning first-up in Hobart over 1600m and his efforts in weight-for-age races has been exemplary.
He contested last year’s Hobart Cup but he is a much better horse this time in.
Geegees Goldengirl won the Devonport Cup before her narrow loss to Up Cups in the Summer Cup.
She is yet to be tested at the 2400m but most are in the same position.
Of the outsiders last start Launceston winner Hugo represents good value at $21 as does Settler’s Stone ($41) that was fourth home behind Hugo and filled the same position in the Brighton Cup when doing his best work at the business end of proceedings.
Hugo was impressive in wining a BM82 over 2100m in Launceston last Wednesday week and it was his brilliant turn of foot 500m from home that assisted the win.
Oerter from the Scott Brunton stable also showed up finishing second while the John Blacker-trained Smoke ‘N’ Whisky was a game third
