JOHN LUTTRELL celebrated his best day as a trainer at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart yesterday.
The astute mentor saddled up his stable star Geegees Blackflash to win the Group 3 Betfair Hobart Cup for the second time in four years but he also prepared the winner Gee Gees Top Notch and third placegetter Gee Gees Vicki in the $100,000 Listed Elwick Stakes for two-year-olds.
Last Friday he also prepared Geegees Classicboy to win the $100,000 Tasmanian Derby.
“This is why we (trainers) put in the long hours and battle the extremes in winter to get these sorts of results,” Luttrell said.
“I am so proud of Geegees Blackflash because he gives his all every time he goes out to race and he is the reason I come to Brighton (training complex) every morning.”
“Then Gee Gees Top Notch comes along and she looks like being something really special,” he said.
“She has been fantastic and if anyone doubted her class before the Elwick Stakes they should now be convinced she is the real deal.”
“And Gee Gees Vicki ran a huge race at 100/1 so she isn’t too far off the mark,” he said,
Gee Gees Top Notch has won three and been placed second twice from her five starts and will now head to the $100,000 Gold Sovereign over 1200 metres on Launceston Cup day (February 25).
Jockey Anthony Darmanin said Gee Gees Top Notch was an exciting juvenile.
”I’ve been at my manager (Ron Cavanagh) for a while to try and get me the ride on this filly and she proved t every bit as good as I thought she was, maybe even better,” Darmanin said as he dismounted after the Elwick Stakes.
“She is tough and very versatile and I’m sure she will appreciate stepping up to the 1200m in the Gold Sovereign,” he said.
