BRIGHTON trainer John Luttrell is proceeding with his plan to run his promising two-year-old Geegees Velvet in a 2YO and upwards maiden over 1100 metres in Hobart today with the view of backing her up in the $50,000 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) in Launceston on Sunday.
Geegees Velvet notched three seconds last preparation and each time it was to star juvenile Grand Tycoon who ended his season with seven wins and a last-start second in the Autumn Classic.
Geegees Velvet was second in the $100,000 Elwick Stakes and $100,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes at her two most recent outings and that should be good enough form to suggest she can win the opening race on today’s seven-event card at Tattersall’s Park.
The Wordsmith filly will be ridden by in-form apprentice Sigrid Carr who will claim two kilograms allowing Geegees Velvet to carry only 52kg.
The interesting runner is first-starter Lord Ashfordly that hasn’t been sighted since he won a trial impressively in July last year on the inside grass in Hobart.
The Gary White-trained youngster won his trial by four lengths hard-held but he went shin sore prior to having his first start so he was tipped out for a spell.
It is not strange for White to produce a two-year-old for a debut effort without a trial under his belt.
The race is for two-year-olds and older maiden performers and while there are a handful older horses in the race their form would suggest the youngsters in the field might have their measure.
The opening race is scheduled to start at 12.52 with the last at 4.28 pm.
Entry, today, is free.
