RISING star pacer Maggie Kennedy confirmed her status as the state’s best three-year-old filly when she scored an effortless win in the Bandbox Stakes at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston on Sunday night.
Maggie Kennedy ($1.20) led from the outset and when driver Ricky Duggan shook the reins at the top of the straight the Wayne Campbell-trained filly powered clear and went on to defeat Ell Ess Babe by almost 10 metres with Modern Lobell a close-up third.
It was a brilliant win and one that driver Duggan described as a “stroll in the park”
“She’s a beautiful filly – I didn’t have to do a thing she just took me for a ride,” he said.
Maggie Kennedy has been a model of consistency this season winning her early three-year-0old races before taking on the best in the Australian derby and the Tasmanian Oaks.
She beat three home in the Australian Derby behind Lanercost and in the Oaks she was the first Tasmanian filly home in third place.
Then she went on a winning spree collecting the Killarney Stud Bouquet and the Princess Of Pace before winning her Bandbox heat before this latest victory in the final.
“We are very lucky to have a filly with so much potential and the best part is she still has plenty of improvement in her,” Campbell said.
A decision on whether Maggie Kennedy heads to the Australian Oaks at Melton in Victoria will depend on how she is travelling at the time.
“The filly has been up a while and done everything we’ve asked of her here in Tassie so the Australian Oaks is an option,” he said.
