TALENTED young Devonport trainer Dean Wells has set his sights on the Adelaide Magic Millions Classic with his potential star juvenile More Awesome following the gelding’s impressive win in the $30,000 Shaw Contracting Alfa Bowl (1200m) under lights in Launceston on Thursday night.
The Victorian-owned gelding was ridden by former Tasmanian but now Sydney-based rider Daniel Ganderton who was forced to change riding plans soon after the start.
More Awesome was forced to race outside of the leader to the home turn before Ganderton released the reins and he quickly put the end result beyond doubt.
More Awesome was not fully extended to score by 1-1/4 lengths from the luckless Oxy Angel with Jeda’s Quest almost two lengths astern.
More Awesome was bred by Gerry Harvey but the gelding was sold for much less than his real worth due to a conformation problem.
“Had he been of perfect conformation he’d have never been seen in Tassie but he had a blemish and that’s how he came to me,” Wells said.
“I liked this horse from day one because had a magnificent physique and all he wants to be is a racehorse, as he’s shown tonight,” her said.
Because the gelding is not eligible for the Tasmanian Magic Millions, Wells has set his sights on the Adelaide version to be run in March.
“I’ll give him a couple of weeks off and set him for the Elwick Stakes in Hobart (January 23) and then we’ll assess whether we make plans to head to South Australia.
While More Awesome was impressive, there also was a lot to like about the effort of Oxy Angel (Glen Boss).
Oxy Angel was dragged back to last on the home turn and Boss almost turned her at a right angle to get off heels and make a charge up the home straight.
She failed by just over a length to haul in the winner but had she had an unimpeded run it may have been a different result.
