VETERAN Devonport-based thoroughbred trainer Vern Poke was supremely confident his lightly raced five-year-old Bring Me Sunshine would win the opening event at Spreyton today and the mare didn’t let him down.
Bring Me Sunshine (Snippetson-Kaysean D’sunshine) was coming off a third at her previous start at Spreyton but was sent out an $8 chance despite it being a handy effort.
But with apprentice Rhonda Mangan aboard the mare showed her customary early speed and sped clear down the back stretch and then booted clear turning for home.
She went on to score by three lengths from Ash For Cash, that was having its first start in the state for Adam Trinder, with Romp Around Jill a nose away third.
Poke said the mare had performed poorly last preparation but the trainer was constantly dealing with her lameness.
Listen to what trainer Vern Poke said about how he went about rectifying the problems that prevented Bring Me Sunshine from realising her potential.
