STEPHEN MASKIELL looks set to win his eighth jockey’s premiership after capturing a double at last Sunday’s meeting on the Tapeta synthetic at Spreyton Park.

Maskiell’s wins aboard Hailed and Jakcorijim took him to within a half-a-win from the injured Brendon McCoull who looked set to win his 13th title until a freak mishap behind the barrier stalls in Hobart two weeks ago resulted in him suffering a fractured collarbone when dislodged from Streetwise Savoire.

Maskiell took his season tally to 63-1/2 and with a good book of rides in Hobart on Sunday he looks set to take the lead in the race for the title.

Anthony Darmanin has 59 wins and he too has some very good rides on Sunday but with only two meetings remaining it is unlikely he can overtake Maskiell.

Maskiell has been one of Tasmania’s best riders for over two decades and he also has been successful overseas.
