REIGNING premier jockey Brendon McCoull edged his way clear of the pack in the race for his 13th premiership with a treble at Tapeta Park Spreyton on Sunday.
McCoull was out of action for almost three months with a broken collarbone and cracked shoulder blade that kept him sidelined through the rich Tasmanian Summer racing Carnival in January-February.
He won the first three legs of the quadrella aboard Arton for trainers David and Scott Brinton, Molvivre for Brighten mentor Paul Jones and the Craig Conron-trained Will’s Power that grabbed victory in the last stride in what was a breathtaking three-way finish.
McCoull’s treble took his season tally to 60 wins and 1-1/2 clear of archrival Stephen Maskiell who partnered Guru Rez to victory in the opening race on the nine-event card.
McCoull is favourite to win the title but Maskiell has been riding in career best form of late and will no doubt make it a close encounter right to the wire.
