A LONG range prediction was realised at the TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston last night when well bred mare Mecadoni scored a narrow but courageous win in a Benchmark 68 handicap over 2100 metres.
Mecadoni’s trainer Steve Davis predicted some time back that the mare would develop into a handy stayer and while this was her first win over 2100m she had scored over 1880m two starts prior at Devonport that suggested Davis was on track with his prediction.
The race was run at a snail pace with Mecadoni (Kelvin Sanderson) taking the lead from the outset with Fugitive Lass content to race at the leader’s girth.
Fugitive Lass issued a serious challenge at the top of the straight but Mecadoni answered the challenge and hit the line with a neck to spare.
Mecadoni is owned and raced by Carol Bakes and Steve Heathcote in partnership with the trainer’s wife.
