Midweek racing at Caulfield and Launceston provided great results for graduates of the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Happy As Hell, a graduate from the 2012 sale for Terry and Karina O’Sullivan took out the Winslow Constructors Handicap (1800m) at Caulfield; in a very impressive staying performance. Settling near the rear of the field, the son of Savoire Vivre (GB) was brought to the outside by jockey Daniel Stackhouse on cornering; to produce a narrow win. This was Happy As Hell second win in as many starts after breaking his maiden over 1600m at Kilmore. Raced by a large group of owners, Happy As Hell was purchased by Terry O’Sullivan for $25,000 from the Whishaw families, Armidale Stud and O’Sullivan’s post-race comments indicated toward Happy As Hell maybe set for the three-year-old classics during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
The success of Savoire Vivre (GB) progeny success didn’t stop with Happy As Hell, were the ill-fated son of Sadler Wells (IRE) sired three legs of the Quadrella at the Launceston evening meeting and all three winners were graduates of the Tasmanian Magic Millions yearling sale. The Charlie Goggin & Luella Meaburn trained; Spotluck took out the Finance Brokers of Tasmania Handicap making it two wins in a row. Spotluck went through the 2009 sale and didn’t make reserve price for owner/breeders, the Runnymede Racing & Breeding syndicate. Simon Said Lets Go also made it two wins on the trot in taking out the Jansz Handicap and second leg of the Quadrella. The Stephan Lockhart trained gelding went through the 2010 sale and again didn’t make reserve price for owner/breeder, John Farrell.
In the AWM Electrical Handicap, What Life Brings (Savoire Vivre (GB)) made an impressive return to racing to kick-off his four-year-old season. The son of good producing mare Sinizzor was successful in the 2013 Hobart Guineas as a three-year-old and looks to have come back to fine shape heading towards the feature races over the 2014 Betfair Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival. Savoire Vivre (GB) is only represented with three yearlings in the 2014 Tasmanian Magic Millions sale.
Earlier in the evening, Must Be Mink made her long waited debut at the races and didn’t let anyone down with an exciting first-up win in the Autobarn Maiden Plate for Bill Ryan and patient owners Kelvin Wadley and family. Must Be Mink was sale topper of the 2012 Tasmanian Magic Millions sale for $60,000 from Alva Stud. The daughter of Musket out of the Tasmanian Guineas winning mare Di’s Angel (Racer’s Edge) has always shown a lot of ability according to Bill Ryan. ‘We’ve always known she was well above average but had to be patient,” Ryan explained post-race. “She won a barrier trial by 7 lengths this time last year but then went shin-sore.”
A yearling daughter of Street Boss will feature in the 2014 Tasmanian sale under the Alva Stud draft which will be sold on behalf of breeders Geoff and Dianne Hillier.
