MUSHY PEAS by name but there’s nothing soft about the way this dog goes about his business on the track.
The Gary Johnson-trained dog delivered a knockout blow to the favourite Ella Lucy on his way to a two-length win in a strong grade five race over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last night (Thursday).
Carrying the pink vest, Mushy Peas began well but was stuck three-wide to the top turn when Ella Lucy and Abira matched motors on his inside.
Ella Lucy looked likely to take the lead but Mushy Peas slipped into another gear to find the rails and was never threatened in the home straight.
Mushy Pease hit the line two lengths clear of Ella Lucy with Sweet Embrace a closing third but over three lengths astern.
The winner stopped the clock at 26.27 that was the best of night.
It was a tough and game win and should he hold that form he should be very competitive as he steps up to grades three-and four level on the Hobart circuit.
