In Brief
- Syd delivers under new silks.
- Gunn was keen to develop a new brand for Motree.
- Ace ride from Pires.
SUCCESSFUL owner-breeder Mandy Gunn celebrated a special win in Devonport on Sunday when her maiden performer Banca Syd broke through for his first win at his 11th start in the Thai Imperial Maiden over 1650m.
But it wasn’t so much about the gelding winning for the first time but that the colours worn by jockey David Pires were a new set of silks especially designed by Gunn.
Gunn owns and operates Motree Thoroughbreds and the colour chart used for her website and stationery is royal blue and white.
“I ended up designing a set of colours that had Mo (front and back) and a tree, and I am pleased with the result,” Gunn said.
The Mo part of the brand relates to Gunn’s former star galloper, Banca Mo, and the Tree part represents Pepper Tree Pty Ltd which is the farming side of her business.
“It was the first time the colours have been worn so hopefully the luck stays with us.”
It was a great ride from Pires who had the gelded five-year-old son of Unusual Suspect settled third on the rails for the entire trip and when they entered the home straight, he called on his charge for the big effort and he answered the call.
French Heiress battled on gamely to finish second ahead of the favourite Captain Morgan that came from last.
Watch Banca Syd score an emphatic win in the Thai Imperial Maiden over 1650 metres.
