TASMANIAN stayer North Lodge gave trainer Michael Voss an unofficial interstate double when he scored a very impressive win in the Schweppes Handicap (RST 89) over 3000 metres at Sandown on the Hillside track yesterday (Wednesday).
With talented apprentice Damian Lane aboard, North Lodge swept on the leaders nearing the home turn and went on to score by over two lengths from the Robert Smerdon-trained Kirribilli Gold with another Tasmanian Geejayhaitch over four lengths away third.
Geejayhaitch is prepared at Broadmarsh by Walter McShane.
North Lodge is trained by Christine Crook but Voss has been looking after her small team while she is overseas attending the Asian Racing Conference in Turkey.
North Lodge is expected to have his next start in a 3000-metre race at Moonee Valley in a fortnight but Geejayhaitch also is likely to line up but this time with a claiming apprentice aboard which should eliminate North Lodge’s weight advantage he took into yesterday’s race.
