THE make-up of today’s Group 3 $35.300 Devonport Cup field comprises seven heat winners and a runner-up from the round of heats but it comes as no surprise that the runner-up Senor Slamma will start the favourite in the North-West Greyhound Racing Club’s showcase event over 452 metres.
Senor Slamma was beaten into second place by the Ted Medhurst-trained Prescribe that also recorded the fastest tome of the seven heat winners, clocking 25.33 on his way to defeating Senor Slamma by three lengths.
But in their heat Prescribe drew box two and Senor Slamma wore the red vest but today Prescribe will start from the squeeze box (five) while Senor Slamma start from box eight which is a very favourable draw for the Gary Johnson-trained dog.
If Senor Slamma flies the lids he will be very hard to beat but Prescribe gave him a four-length start last week and chased him down to go on and record an emphatic win.
On paper it would appear a match in two but the Kelly Bravo-trained Her Highness has drawn the coveted inside alley (1) and she looms as a serious contender for the major prize.
She was formerly trained in Tasmania by Keith Nichols who said some time back she was a tenacious bitch that was destined to win a major race and while he won’t be in his care for today’s event his work with her has contributed to where she is today.
Hobart trainer Gary Fahey has three of the finalists and all are from the same litter (Mogambo-Dennes Point).
Little separates Bruny Venture (6) and Breaker’s Tip (4) that each won convincingly and in similar time (25.55 and 25.58 respectively) while Rip and Tear was the slowest of the seven heat winners clocking 25.96 but he has drawn the best of Fahey’s trio.
Ted Medhurst also has Dark Vito in the final and from box two he could be the knockout runner as he recorded a slick 25.37 in winning his heat and he is in sensational form with his heat win his fifth victory in succession.
Pipstar also was impressive in winning her heat and should she find the lure first from box three she will take come running down.
