FORMER Tasmania Cup winner Our Chain Of Command returned to form with a track record-breaking win in the $10,000 Golden Mile over 1680m at the TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston last night.
It was an emphatic win by the six-year-old that had not been able to win since emerging triumphant in an Easter Cup heat in Launceston in April last year.
But after being given the run of the race in the one-out-one-back position by talented young reinsman Mark Yole, Our Chain Of Command (Julius Caesar-Cams Gift) scorched home in a sizzling last half (800m) that produced a mile rate of 1m.55.49 seconds that shaved almost four-tenths of a second off the previous best set by Mountain Glory in 2001.
The New Zealand-bred gelding was prepared by Dean Braun when he won the Group 1 $100,000 Tasmania Cup in 2010 but the gelding was sold and landed in he care of talented Hobart trainer Juanita McKenzie about five weeks ago.
Empty Envelope ($3.80) led from the pole position while the in-form Aapennon faced the breeze with the well backed Queen Of Fire ($4.60) on the leader’s back.
When Our Chain Of Command ($27) emerged to challenge the leaders Queen Of Fire was climbing all over the leader’s back with nowhere to go.
But it is doubtful she would have been able to match the powerful finish of Our Chain Of Command that rattled off a last quarter (400m) in 27.1 seconds.
Our Chain Of Command hit the line well clear of Empty Envelope with Aapenon hanging on for third just in advance of Ohoka Utah.
