WHEN Longford trainer Peter Luttrell prepared Ourmaher for his first preparation he was convinced the gelding would need time to develop.
With the owner, Peter’s wife Debbie, satisfied that they would have to wait for a return, the long haul to the gelding’s first win began.
Last season Ourmaher won a maiden at a night meeting in Launceston in January after which the winning rider Peter Mertens declared the horse had “untapped ability”.
At Spreyton last Sunday Ourmaher delivered the goods at his third start this preparation and given the way he found the line Luttrell is understandably excited about his prospects.
This latest win was impressive. Rider Anthony Darmanin had Ourmaher settled just off the speed with cover and the gelding was under a string hold nearing the home turn.
Beer Belly led and looked to be travelling comfortably 400 metres out but apprentice Bulent Muhcu went for home early and put his charge under pressure that may have resulted in the Adam Trinder-trained gelding drifting off the fence turning for home.
This allowed Darmanin to urge Ourmaher to take the shortest route home along the rail and that was the difference at the business end of proceedings.
