In Brief

  • Overdue win for Perfect Words.
  • Trainer emotional after maiden win.
  • Jockey confident mare can win again.

Consistent mare Perfect Words finally broke her maiden status with an emphatic all-the-way win in the opening race on the nine-event card in Launceston last night.

The Gary White-trained mare had finished second at her two previous outings and deserved to break through.

Perfect Words ($2.10 fav) made the most of her inside draw to lead and once in front, rider Craig Newitt ensured a solid tempo and still had her under wraps when the field wheeled into the home straight.

The daughter of Wordsmith-Perfectly Poised gave her rivals the slip in the home straight to go on and score comfortably from first starter Supalopo ($10.00) with Red Roger ($3.60 to $5.00) a closing third in the maiden over 1220m.

White was quite emotional after the win.

“Relief for me because we’ve had so much go wrong in our lives this past year and this mare has been so competitive it is great that she has finally broken through,” White said.

“We’ve always thought she’d get ground but we are now committed to chasing the shorter trips, at least for the rest of this preparation.

“I’m rapt for my best mate Ronny Gudden as he and his son Rohan bred her and that makes the win even more enjoyable.”

Newitt said the mare was always travelling like a winner.

“She just switched off for me and when the other horses (I’m a Floozy) loomed out wide I just gave my mare a dig and she left them standing.

“She found the line well so it’s definitely not her last win.”
