ONE of Tasmania’s leading jockeys David Pires is back in the saddle after almost nine months on the sidelines.

Pires suffered breaks in both of his hands as a result of a fall at Tattersall’s Park last April.

It looked a harmless incident when Pires was dumped by a horse on the way to the barriers but subsequent examinations revealed multiple breaks to bones in his right hand and left wrist.

A failed bone graft in one of his hands caused major delays in his return to the saddle but he was patient and should be rewarded for not rushing back too soon.

Pires has been riding a lot of trackwork for Brighton trainer John Luttrell that has resulted in him acquiring five rides for the stable at Tattersall’s Park today.
