TALENTED jockey David Pires has been one of Tasmania’s best senior riders for many years and this season he could have the stable behind him to capture the ultimate prize – the statewide premiership.

Pires landed a treble at Devonport last Sunday to take his season tally after five meetings to eight and three clear of his nearest rivals, apprentices Siggy Carr, David Fisher and Ismail Toker.

His winners were Neconni Girl for John Luttrell, the David Miller-trained Darchill and Uboa for Whitemore trainer Graeme McCulloch.

While his treble came from horses from three different stables he has aligned himself with the John Luttrell stable at Brighton and given that trainer prepares the bulk of horses owned by the state’s leading owners Pau and Elizabeth Gerard, Pires is in a position to reap the rewards of his hared work.

“I don’t know a rider with a better work ethic than David’s,” said trainer John Luttrell.

Pires admits winning the premiership would be his ultimate goal but it isn’t something on which he focuses.

While Pires has taken the early lead, the wall of apprentices chasing him is a sign that the industry’s jockey ranks are in great shape.
