POPPY’S SINGER is the latest surprise packet to emerge from the Brendan Pursell kennel.
In Hobart last night (Thursday) Poppy’s Singer scored an emphatic win in a strong grade four event over 461 metres and along the way broke the 26 second barrier that pleased his trainer no end.
The well bred dog (Trewly Special-Runaway Promises) began well from box one and after mustering speed to lead he comfortably to the top turn he powered home in the home straight to score by over four lengths from the highly promising Gemstone Jack with Lashing Illusion almost a length astern.
“The first shock was the dog beginning really well and he made full use of the inside box but to break 26 seconds was a real surprise,” Pursell said.
“I’ve always thought he had the potential to run good times so maybe he has turned the corner.”
“I’d like to think he can keep going on with it and if he does my wife (Lynne) is going to be pleased because she part- owns him,” Pursell said.
Poppy’s Singer is only lightly raced having had 24 starts for five wins and 10 minor placings.
“The dog has been very consistent and has definitely paid his way,” the trainer said.
Poppy’s Singer’s time was only bettered by one-hundredth of a second by star sprinter Buckle Up Wes (25.96) in the invitation race.
