THE Burnie Harness Racing Club will stage its penultimate meeting of the season tonight with seven races on what appears an open seven-race card.

The Craig Hayes-trained and driven Publican Pete looms as one of the best bets in the Thorate Incentive (race 5) over 2180m.

The striking grey three-year-old is coming off an eye-catching second to Bettors Express at Scottsdale on January 7.

He showed a liking for the standing start that day so he should be expected to step cleanly once the strands have been released tonight.

Publican Pete is related to former handy grey filly Marjy Mary that won nine and was placed 11 times from 39 starts.

She won numerous class races and juvenile features and her second in the 2006 Betfair Sweepstakes final behind the Ross Payne-trained Hologram was a sensational effort.

Publican Pete has had six starts this season for two minor placings but provided he steps cleanly and avoids trouble from his second-row draw he should she his maiden status.
