Gareth Rattray set to take Alabar Australasian Young Drivers Championship

Tasmanian reinsman Gareth Rattray will take an unbeatable lead into the final round of the Alabar Australasian Young Drivers Championship at Menangle tomorrow.

Rattray has accrued 71 points to hold a 19 point lead with only one heat remaining at Menangle tomorrow.

He went into the penultimate round of heats at Newcastle tonight with a 14-point advantage over Caleb Lewis from Victoria but courtesy of a third in the first heat tonight aboard Points North and he then finished second on $9 chance Photograph to take his overall points tally to 71 and 19 clear of his nearest rival Dexter Dunn from New Zealand who won the first heat tonight and ran third in the second heat.

Rattray is a previous winner, having taken the title in 2003 in New Zealand when only a 17-year-old.

The series winner is determined on a points score basis with points varying depending on the number of runners in each field.

Based on a maximum field of 10, the winning driver will earn 17 points with the runner-up allocated 12 and third placed netting nine points.

Fourth will receive seven and reducing by one through to last.
