ONE of last season’s best two-year-olds Geegees Doublejay could not have been more impressive in winning first-up from a spell at Spreyton two weeks ago so it is no surprise he is expected to start favourite to repeat the dose in a benchmark 72 event over 1000 metres at Spreyton on Sunday.
Geegees Doublejay demolished arguably one of the best class one fields offered on the Devonport synthetic surface this year and his trainer Stuart Gandy was full of praise following the win and predicted more of the same given the gelding had thrived since the first-up assignment.
The Wordsmith gelding goes up in weight (2 kg) and drops back in distance but he has drawn well and will again be partnered by David Pires who is riding in career best form.
Smart three-year-old filly Lustica also resumed with an impressive win over 900 metres in a not-so-strong class one handicap the same day Geegees Doublejay resumed but she too will have her warranted share of support.
Five-year-old Tennessee Drive is surprisingly the least experienced of the main chances as he has had only three starts for two wins and a luckless last-start second to Bernaurd after clipping heels and almost falling the last time he tackled the Tapeta track.
Speedy mare Jypsiere is the only other possible winning chance but the seven-year-old will be giving away weight and falls short in the class department compared to the other three up-and-coming stars of the future.
