TALENTED sprinter Mr Fashion returned in great order at Hobart a fortnight ago much to the relief of trainer Leon Laskey after an injury plagued 19 months.
Not seen since the 2012 Newmarket Handicap, Mr Fashion’s career was thought to be over after a continuing problem with the geldings feet.
“He has had some issues throughout his career and after the Newmarket run when he didn’t let go we thought it was the correct decision to finish him up” Laskey said
The then six-year-old spent the next 12 months in the paddock before Laskey contemplated trying the gelding again for another campaign.
“We gave him time in the paddock and after a year away I thought to myself I might never get another horse like him again, so I slowly started to put him back into work” he said
Laskey, who rides the gelding in his work, spent the next 8 months working to get Mr Fashion to the races at Hobart a fortnight ago, and believes the horse is heading in the right direction.
“I was really relieved with how he came back. Since the run he has come on well, he has done everything right and I expect a bold showing from him on Sunday”
Mr Fashion has drawn wide for apprentice Georgie Catania on Sunday but the gelding should once again roll forward from the outside gate.
“He handles all conditions and has a bit more weight than last time against the progressive horses but he will run a good race”.
Laskey has long term goals in mind for his start sprinter with another tilt at the Newmarket a realistic target.
“If he comes through this preparation in good order I know he has the quality to line up in a Newmarket.”
