In Brief

  • Apprentice eyes first winner.
  • Light weight and good barrier should ensure Reward Achiever starts favourite.
  • Jordan could snare a double if Tassie first-starter Raghu lives up to his trial win.

Apprentice Codi Jordan waited a long time to make her race riding debut and delivered a good performance in Devonport last week aboard Stanfield Carus for her boss Glenn Stevenson.

With that milestone out of the way Jordan has the chance to snare her first winner at only her second race ride when she partners Reward Achiever in the opening race in Devonport on Sunday.

Reward Achiever is one of Stevenson’s most promising stable tenants having had only three starts for a win and two minor placings with the latest an impressive victory in an 1150-metre maiden at the end of July.

Stevenson trialed the four-year-old mare last week which she won convincingly over 800 metres and that should have her would up for Sunday’s benchmark 60 assignment.

Jordan, 23, hails from the North-West Coast and has longed to carve a career from racing for many years.

Her four-kilogram claim will allow Reward Achiever to carry the light weight of 54.5 kilograms and combined with a perfect barrier draw (2) this looks an ideal opportunity for the mare to make it back-to-back wins.

Cameron Thompson has two in the race in Trojan Storm and Limerick City and both appear to be dangers with Trojan Storm the best of the duo.

The Leanne Gaffney-trained Artuso has been working up to a win and looms as a genuine each-way hope while Varekai has had two outings this time in and should be ready to improve.

If there was to be an upset, it could come from the Andrew Moore-trained Casino Angel that produced consecutive minor placings last prep when in the care of Victorian trainer Nick Harnett who had the mare for seven starts.

The mare has just returned to Moore’s stables and given her record on the provincial circuit she is a top each-way prospect.

Jordan also takes the sit aboard the Rowan Hamer-trained Raghu that is having his first start in the state.

Raghu won a trial in Devonport late last month with Jordan aboard, defeating Aspirate and Hellova Street which suggests the former Jason Warren-trained eight-year-old gelding warrants respect.

Watch Reward Achiever win a maiden in Devonport at the end of July.
