Richoman causes upset in St Leger

GALLANT stayer Richoman caused one of the major upsets of the season when the Mark Ganderton-trained gelding outstayed Geegees Blackflash to win the Tasmanian St Leger over 2100 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston today.

Geegees Blackflash was sent out the $1.30 favourite but Richoman with Stephen Maskiell aboard showed daring catch me if you can tactics to set up a 12-length break on the rest after 1000 metres.

Geegees Blackflash was bustled by rider David Pires to get into the race and nearing the homer turn the favourite moved alongside the leader and looked set to cruise to the front.

But Richoman had other ideas and kept finding under strong riding from Maskiell and on the line had a half-head to spare over Geegees Blackflash.

Packedtotherafters ran on resolutely to finish third in advance of Mary’s Cinder.
