DELORAINE trainer Andrew Roach took two horses to Hobart today and walked away with a double, a feat that left a bitter-sweet taste in the mouths of punters.

Hawk In Silver (Crystal Hallett) delivered a knockout blow to punters in the opening race scoring as one of the rank outsiders, paying over $50 on The TOTE.

But two races later he saddled up Thirsty Merc (Remi Tremsal) that was heavily backed to start second favourite at $4.20 and he duly saluted with a bold front-running display.

Roach was thrilled with the double but he was extremely pleased with Hawk In Silver’s effort.

“This horse (Hawk In Silver) has had only two starts for me but his previous run was in a class two and it was a fair effort so coming back to a maiden I thought he had a show and up he’s got at big odds,” Roach said.

Thirsty Merc’s win was expected as he had been placed at previous start and had not been far away from the winner at his two previous tries.

“I’ve always had time for Thirsty Merc as a horse and while he’s taken a while to finally break through I reckon he’s got a few wins in him,” Roach said.

“He’s got plenty of early speed and he has the ability to sprint away and that’s what won him the race today,” Roach said.
