THOROUGHBRED trainer Kath Kennedy has only a small team in work but what she feeds every day may have the potential to keep her in the winner’s circle on a regular basis in the coming months.
One of her team Shah Deimos broke his maiden status with a last-stride win in the Tasbonus 2YO and Upward maiden Plate over 1200 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston on Sunday.
With Anthony Darmanin in the saddle, Shah Deimos ground down tearaway leader Victory Medal to grab victory in the shadows of the post.
It was a game win, as the lightly raced three-year-old had to contend with a fierce headwind that greeted the runners as they took on the long uphill run to the line.
At one stage it looked as if the gelded son of Statue Of Liberty might come up short but under strong riding from Darmanin he found enough to shed his non-winner tag.
Shah Deimos was having only his fourth start but had put the writing on the wall with minor lacings at his previous three outings.
Kennedy said she would aim Shah Deimos at the $25,000 Autumn 3YO Classic over 1400m in Launceston in three weeks for what is likely to be his last outing this preparation.
