Topflight sprinter Siberia claimed the fourth feature race of his outstanding career in Tasmania when recording an all the way win Thursday night’s H.G.R.C Easter Cup Final (461m) at Ladbrokes Park in Hobart.
Prepared well at Mangalore by prominent owner/trainer Debbie Cannan, the well-bred son of Barcia Bale and Emerald Lee was drawn in box four, bouncing straight to the front of the field in the early stages of the race.
Despite the best efforts late of Green Machine and Fabulous Baroque the blue chaser was too strong at the finish, kicking clear in the home straight to score by almost three lengths on the line in 26.00s.
Debbie Cannan, who also bred Siberia, was ecstatic following his performance in taking out the Easter Cup.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Siberia – he’s continued to race in top company his whole career,” Debbie said.
“It’s a credit to his ability knowing that Siberia does come from behind in most races and he can be well out of the boxes too at the right time; he was at his best when hitting the front early and I was shocked when he held them off.”
Siberia has now won 17 races from 41 starts with four seconds and eight thirds with stakes earnings of $48,340.
“Full credit to Ted (Medhurst) who also reared the litter – it’s been a great bloodline for us,” the trainer added.
Four feature races are in credit to Siberia having previously won a Hobart Breeders Classic, Tasmanian Sprint Championship and Young Star Classic all in Hobart with a track and distance record of nine wins from 22 starts.
Brighton trainer Blake Pursell added another feature win to his cabinet with Beep Test Baron pulling out all stops to take home the Carlton Draught Easter Plate Final for well distinguished Melbourne based owner Brooke Ennis.
The son of Black Magic Opal notched its eighth career win from the fast-finishing Brindle Burner running 25.80s.
Don’t Start Now made it two straight wins in the O’Driscoll Coaches Easter Purse Final for trainer Nick Howard.
With exceptional early speed the daughter of Barcia Bale and Apache Dream had set up a winning break coming off the back, leading throughout to defeat Over The Anvil and Russia With Love to register its seventh win.
