BUCKLE UP WES’ quest to win another Group 1 this season ended tonight when he failed to win his heat of the Melbourne Cup over 515 metres at Sandown.

The Ted Medhurst-trained dog missed the start slightly from box seven and interference at each of the first two turns ended his chances.

Cosmic Wise (1) began brilliantly to lead and the Jeff Britton-trained dog had enough in reserve to hold out Joey Valdez and One Dee while Buckle Up Wes managed to beat one home.

Buckle Up Wes will now concentrate on the Group 1 Hobart Thousand with heats of that series to be run at Tattersall’s Park on December  11 and the final a week later.
