THE courageous win by Socks in the $50,000 Launceston Mitsubishi Sires Produce Stakes under lights in Launceston last Thursday night should have clinched the Two-Year-Old of the Year award.

Socks heads to the spelling paddock undefeated from four starts and with two of his triumphs in $40-$50,000 feature races.

The George Blacker-trained Keep The Faith gelding has accrued just over $100,000 in prize money and given he was only a $15,000 purchase at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Launceston last year he is clearly the bargain buy of the sale so far.

Socks was awesome in the Sires Produce, as he raced out of his comfort zone on a leader-bias track and was forced to race three-wide throughout, although he had some cover from the 700m to the home turn.

Jockey Kelvin Sanderson summed up the gelding’s effort when he said: “This horse is a freak.”

“He’s done it the hard way to win the Sires when most other horses would have either failed to handle the pressure or thrown in the towel after such a tough run,” he said.
