- Gee Gee Josie proves she is Tassie's best juvenile.
Trainer Tony McEvoy will target feature races at Morphettville for his talented two-year-old Jyoti following her impressive win in the $150,000 Listed Alfa Gold Sovereign over 1200m in Launceston on Wednesday night.
Jyoti ridden by Jamie Kah showed tremendous fighting spirit as she staved off all challengers in the home straight to win at only her third race start.
Jyoti ($1.85 favourite) settled on the speed and Kah allowed her to find her rhythm before urging her to the front as the field swept into the home straight.
But she was under siege when a wall of rivals sprinted to her 150 metres from home but the daughter of Akeed Mofeed refused to wilt and fought back to defeat the Stuart Gandy-trained Gee Gee Josie ($8.50) and another interstate invader in Avenue of Pleasure ($9.00) from the David and Sam Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable.
McEvoy didn’t attend the meeting but was elated when contacted by Tasracing.
“That was one hell of a win,” McEvoy said.
“She was so courageous and lived up to all of our expectations.
“We have always had a good opinion of this filly and now we can look at a couple of feature races at home at Morphettville.”
Kah said the filly always travelled like the winner.
“I was happy to be close to the lead and in a position to win when we turned for home,” Kah said.
“She was so determined and when they came at her she found a bit extra. It was a very courageous win.”
Gee Gee Josie was game again having spent the last half of the race three-wide without cover and Reite Den Blitz also was courageous as she couldn’t find cover due to a wide gate but she battled on tenaciously to finish fifth and only 1.6 lengths from the winner.
It was a similar scenario for the Leanne Gaffney-trained Le Cadeau that was fourth and just over a half-length from Jyoti on the line.
Watch Jyoti win the $150,000 Alfa Gold Sovereign in Launceston on Wednesday night.
