BRIGHTON trainer Michael Luttrell is no stranger to preparing doubles but the one he snared in Hobart today (Sunday) meant something special.

Luttrell saddled up Heartbreak Lass to win the Steeple Jack Wines (C1) Handicap over 1100 metres and in the following race his old war horse Heartbreak Kid produced a barnstorming finish to win the Ballast Stone Estate Wines open handicap over 1400 metres.

Heartbreak Lass was resuming from a spell and it was only her third start but she belied her inexperience by hitting the front 200 metres out and despite running about over the concluding stages she won with ease.

“This filly has so much ability it’s scary,” Luttrell said.

“She’s travelled well but when she’s hit the front she’s run about all over the place but we will be able to straighten her out and when I do she should have a very good career ahead of her,” he said.

But Heartbreak Kid’s win meant a lot to Luttrell who can’t speak highly enough of the gelding’s character and will to win.

Heartbreak Kid was ridden back in the field and ridden for luck by in-form jockey Lee Smith, who also partnered Heartbreak Lass.

Heartbreak Kid improved steadily from the 500-metre peg and when he saw a gap 200 metres out he powered through and went on to defeat Milochello by a half-length.
