SEVEN Mile Beach trainer Tammy Mollross was taken by surprise at Tapeta Park at Devonport today where her three-year-old filly Star Of Egypt scored an impressive win in the Shaw Contracting 3YO Maiden over 900 metres.

Star Of Egypt (Telesto-Pharaoh’s Daughter) was having her first start for Mollross since transferring from the Ken and Tanya Hanson stable.

The filly began well and settled second behind the heavily backed favourite Ambassadora that was backed in to start a $1.90 chance with Craig Newitt in the saddle.

Ambassadora showed plenty of speed but when Star Of Egypt reduced the margin to two lengths turning for homer it was obvious the leader was about to be swallowed up.

With Le Smith aboard, Star Of Egypt cruised to the lead and had enough in reserve to hold out the fast-finishing Tango’s Gee Gee that was a half-length astern and two lengths in advance of the Graeme McCulloch-trained Adatom.

Star Of Egypt stopped the clock at 54.05s on a rain affected track.

Mollross said her filly had shown a bit on the training rack but not enough to suggest she could win first-up.

Star Of Egypt was having her first start since finishing well down the track in Hobart in February in a 2YO Maiden over 940m.
