Tasmanian mare Still a Star will return to Melbourne in a fortnight to contest the $165,000 Group 3 Victoria Handicap over 1400m at Caulfield.
Still a Star won the Group 3 Vamos Stakes first-up in Launceston late last month and followed up with a 13th of 15 behind Mugatoo in the $5 million All-Star Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley at what was her first interstate outing last Saturday week.
The mare’s trainer Bill Ryan confirmed she will have a track gallop in Launceston on Wednesday night in preparation for her next assignment on Easter Saturday.
“The track gallop on Wednesday night will be our last chance to give her a decent hit-out on turf before heading back to Melbourne,” Ryan said.
“The Victoria handicap is over 1400m, but I’ll have no trouble freshening her up to drop back 200m in distance.
“I had a long discussion with some people in Melbourne and they confirmed there was very little about that will suit the mare in the coming weeks, so the Victoria Handicap was as good as any I looked at.”
Two options for the mare are at Morphettville in South Australia on Goodwood Handicap day (May 15), comprising the $120,000 R. A. Lee Stakes over 1600m or the $100,000 AAMI Centaurea Stakes, a Listed race for fillies and mares over 2000m.
